Volcanoes National Park sits on Rwanda’s stretch of the Virunga volcano range, five dormant and active peaks straddling the border with Uganda and DR Congo. A trip built entirely around this one park, without extending to Lake Kivu or Nyungwe, keeps every day focused on the volcanoes themselves — gorillas, golden monkeys, and the option of a genuine mountain hike.

Days 1-2: Kigali to Musanze and Gorilla Trekking

Transfer and the core trekking day.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking

A shorter trek to golden monkey troops.

Day 4: Dian Fossey Grave Hike

A full-day hike to Karisoke, the former research camp where Dian Fossey lived and is buried among her gorillas.

Day 5: Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo

A scenic day at Rwanda’s twin lakes, north of Musanze, for canoeing or simply resting after several activity days.

Day 6: Second Gorilla Trek

A second permit with a different habituated family.

Day 7: Return to Kigali

The drive back for your onward flight.

What to Budget

Two gorilla permits, golden monkey permit, Dian Fossey hike fee, six nights of lodging.
