DR Congo’s Virunga National Park offers the least expensive gorilla permit in the region, but whether it’s worth adding to a Uganda or Rwanda trip depends on more than just price.
The Case For Adding It
At 400 US dollars, the Virunga permit is roughly half of Uganda’s and a quarter of Rwanda’s — for travellers who’ve already trekked in one of the other two countries and want a third gorilla encounter, or who are more price-sensitive, it’s a genuinely significant saving.
The Case Against
The extra border crossing, the need to check current security conditions, and generally less developed tourism infrastructure than Uganda or Rwanda mean it adds real planning complexity for a trip that’s otherwise straightforward.
Our Honest Take
For a first gorilla trekking trip, we generally recommend Uganda or Rwanda alone. DR Congo makes more sense as a deliberate addition for repeat visitors specifically seeking a third country and a lower-cost permit, always subject to a current security check at time of booking.
