Why Nkuringo Feels Different
Nkuringo sits on a ridge rather than down in the forest itself, meaning the drive in and the walk to the trailhead both come with genuine Virunga volcano views on a clear day — a backdrop none of Bwindi’s other three sectors can match. The trade-off is terrain: treks from Nkuringo tend toward steeper start and end sections than Buhoma, since the trailhead itself sits higher.
The Trek
The same core structure as anywhere in Bwindi — a 7:30am ranger briefing, an unpredictable trek to find your assigned family, and a strict one hour once located — but through terrain and forest that feels noticeably less trafficked than the park’s more established sectors.
Beyond the Trek: The Nkuringo Community Walk
Nkuringo’s cultural walk, through terraced hillside farmland and the local community that borders the park, is widely considered one of the best in the Bwindi area — a genuine alternative to a Batwa forest walk, focused instead on how local farming communities live alongside the park boundary today.
