Which Border Post to Use
Cyanika, near Kisoro on the Uganda side, is the most direct crossing for travellers moving between Bwindi and Musanze — a much shorter detour than the alternative Katuna/Gatuna crossing further east, which suits travellers coming from Kampala rather than the gorilla parks directly.
Visa Requirements
Most nationalities can obtain visas for both Uganda and Rwanda on arrival or via e-visa in advance; the East Africa Tourist Visa, valid across Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya, is worth investigating if you’re visiting multiple countries in the region on one trip.
What the Crossing Actually Involves
An immigration exit stamp on the Uganda side, a short walk or drive across the border zone, and an entry stamp on the Rwanda side — typically 30 to 60 minutes total including vehicle changeover, since most operators use a different vehicle and driver-guide on each side of the border.
Currency
Uganda uses the Ugandan shilling, Rwanda the Rwandan franc — US dollars are widely accepted for permits and larger payments in both countries, but small cash needs are easier with local currency.
