Where Volcanoes National Park is high-altitude bamboo and volcanic slopes, Nyungwe is dense, ancient montane rainforest — one of Africa’s oldest. First-timers often find this the most visually striking part of the whole trip, not just an add-on to the gorilla trek.
Don’t Skip the Canopy Walk
Nyungwe’s suspended canopy walkway, 70 metres above the forest floor, is one of the only structures of its kind in East Africa. It’s a short, manageable walk rather than a physical challenge, and gives a completely different view of the forest than any trek can.
Break the Journey at Lake Kivu
Well-built 7-day itineraries route the long drive south via Lake Kivu rather than doing it in one push — first-timers should specifically ask for this if their operator hasn’t already built it in.
