Canopy Walk in Rwanda – A Thrilling Forest Adventure in Nyungwe

Hidden deep within the emerald heart of Nyungwe Forest National Park, the Canopy Walk in Rwanda is one of Africa’s most exhilarating nature experiences. Suspended high above the ancient rainforest, this 160-meter-long bridge offers breathtaking views of mist-shrouded treetops, mountain peaks, and the endless green expanse of one of Africa’s oldest rainforests.

The Canopy Walk is not just a sightseeing activity — it’s a journey through Rwanda’s natural wonder, where you feel the pulse of the forest beneath your feet and the symphony of birds, monkeys, and rustling leaves all around you.

About Nyungwe Forest National Park

Located in southwestern Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is a vast tropical rainforest covering more than 1,000 square kilometers, making it one of the largest and most biologically rich forests in Africa. It forms part of the Albertine Rift Mountains and is home to:

  • Over 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and colobus monkeys.

  • More than 300 bird species, many of which are endemic to the region.

  • Hundreds of tree, orchid, and butterfly species that thrive in its cool, moist climate.

This incredible biodiversity makes Nyungwe a must-visit for nature lovers, birdwatchers, photographers, and adventure seekers — with the Canopy Walk as its signature attraction.

The Canopy Walk Experience

The Canopy Walkway is a suspended bridge that hangs 70 meters (230 feet) above the forest floor, stretching 160 meters (525 feet) across lush valleys. It’s the only one of its kind in East Africa and one of the highest in Africa.

The adventure begins at the Uwinka Visitor Center, where visitors receive a short briefing and set off on a guided nature walk through the forest. The hike to the canopy is about 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles) round trip and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on pace and fitness level.

As you ascend into the canopy, the world transforms — sunlight filters through towering mahoganies, birds flutter between branches, and the air feels alive with energy. Stepping onto the swaying bridge is thrilling yet safe, offering panoramic views that stretch as far as Lake Kivu on clear days.

What You’ll See:

  • Primates: Blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, and sometimes chimpanzees in the distance.

  • Birds: Great blue turacos, Rwenzori batis, sunbirds, and crowned eagles.

  • Flora: Giant ferns, orchids, and ancient hardwood trees.

The experience is both peaceful and adrenaline-pumping — a perfect blend of serenity and adventure.
