Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrive Entebbe/Kampala

Your driver-guide meets you inside the arrivals hall at Entebbe International Airport with an Amazing Gorilla Safaris board, for the roughly forty-minute drive into Kampala along the busy Entebbe Road. The evening is unstructured — time to settle in and rest ahead of tomorrow’s long drive south-west.

DAY 2

Kampala to Bwindi

An early departure, by 6:00–6:30am, to clear Kampala before the morning traffic thickens, out through the Northern Bypass onto the Masaka Road, a photo stop at the Equator crossing in Kayabwe, and lunch at Igongo Cultural Centre near Mbarara before the final climb into the Kigezi highlands — roughly 8–9 hours and 520km in total. Evening trekking briefing on arrival at your Bwindi sector lodge.

DAY 3

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

7:30am briefing at park headquarters, rangers assigning trekking groups of up to eight to specific habituated families based on fitness and that morning’s tracker reports, then the trek itself through dense, often muddy rainforest — thirty minutes to six hours — followed by a strict hour with the family.

DAY 4

Cross the Border to Rwanda

The drive to the Cyanika border post takes under two hours from most Bwindi sectors, through Kisoro town with the Virunga volcanoes already visible ahead. The crossing itself is a standard land-border process — passport stamps on both sides, generally under an hour barring unusual delays — and your same driver-guide stays with you throughout rather than switching vehicles at the border. From Cyanika it’s a short further drive to Kinigi, arriving with time to settle in before an evening trekking briefing for tomorrow’s second trek.

DAY 5

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

A 6am wake-up for the drive to park headquarters, the 7am briefing opening with a performance by the Kinigi intore dancers before groups of up to eight are assigned to families, then the trek itself through increasingly misty forest on the volcanic slopes — noticeably different terrain from Bwindi’s rainforest the day before — and the strict hour with your second gorilla family.

DAY 6

Golden Monkey Tracking

A markedly gentler day: a drop down into the park’s bamboo zone to find a troop of golden monkeys, playful and constantly on the move, a genuine contrast in pace after two demanding trek days.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 7

Transfer to Kigali

The drive to Kigali covers under two hours on well-maintained roads, arriving with the afternoon free for a city tour: the Kigali Genocide Memorial, widely regarded as essential context for understanding modern Rwanda, followed by time at Kimironko Market or a craft cooperative.

What the Border Crossing Actually Involves

The Cyanika or Katuna crossing is a standard land border process — passport stamps on both sides, typically taking under an hour barring unusual delays — followed by a continued drive into Rwanda. We handle the logistics directly, and our guide stays with the group throughout rather than switching at the border.

What to Pack

Sturdy hiking boots for both treks, long trousers and sleeves, a rain jacket, and gardening-style gloves — the same core kit doubled up for two separate gorilla encounters.
Do I need separate visas for Uganda and Rwanda?Unless you’re eligible for the East Africa Tourist Visa (covering Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya on one visa), yes — we’ll confirm current requirements for your nationality during planning.
