7 Days Gorilla Trekking Rwanda and Primates

Day 1 – Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Guests arrive at Kigali International Airport and are welcomed by their safari guides. After a briefing, the journey to Volcanoes National Park begins, taking approximately two to three hours through Rwanda’s scenic terraced hills and verdant landscapes. Along the route, guides provide insights into local culture, agriculture, and the country’s conservation efforts.

Upon arrival, guests check into their lodge, enjoy lunch, and spend the afternoon relaxing or taking a short nature walk to appreciate the volcanic scenery. This day allows for acclimatization and preparation for the upcoming gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 2 – Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The day begins early with breakfast followed by a briefing at the park headquarters. Rangers provide instructions on trekking protocols, hygiene measures, and safety precautions to protect both visitors and gorillas. Each participant is assigned a habituated gorilla family.

The trek can last between one and six hours depending on the gorillas’ location. Trails traverse bamboo forests and montane rainforest, offering opportunities to observe a variety of flora and smaller wildlife. Once the gorillas are located, guests spend one hour observing them in their natural habitat. Photography and quiet observation are encouraged, maintaining safe distances as instructed by the guides.

After the trek, guests return to their lodge for lunch, rest, and reflection on the unforgettable experience.

Day 3 – Golden Monkey Tracking

Golden monkey tracking is scheduled for the morning. These lively and social primates inhabit bamboo forests within Volcanoes National Park. The trek typically lasts two to four hours and offers excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and close observation of their playful behavior and bright golden fur.

After lunch, guests may enjoy a cultural experience visiting local communities or scenic viewpoints. The afternoon allows time to rest and prepare for the journey to Nyungwe Forest the following day.

Day 4 – Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, travelers embark on a scenic drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park. The route passes through rolling hills, tea plantations, and rural villages, offering opportunities to observe Rwanda’s lush highland landscapes. Upon arrival, guests check into their lodge and have the rest of the afternoon to relax, enjoy the surroundings, and prepare for chimpanzee trekking.

Evening briefings provide an overview of the next day’s activities, including trekking protocols, safety measures, and tips for spotting primates in dense rainforest environments.

Day 5 – Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest

Early morning is ideal for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe’s ancient rainforest. Rangers guide guests through the dense vegetation in search of habituated chimpanzee groups. The trek can be moderately challenging due to steep terrain, but the reward is observing these intelligent primates feeding, vocalizing, and interacting within their social groups.

The afternoon is dedicated to the Nyungwe canopy walkway, a suspended bridge high above the forest floor. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views, spot additional wildlife, and photograph the rainforest from a unique perspective. Evening returns to the lodge for relaxation and dinner.

Day 6 – Primate and Birdwatching Exploration

This day combines additional primate encounters with birdwatching and nature walks. Nyungwe Forest hosts numerous primate species such as colobus monkeys, as well as over 300 bird species, including turacos and hornbills. Guided walks allow travelers to observe wildlife, learn about forest ecology, and capture photography opportunities.

The afternoon may include short hikes, cultural visits, or lodge-based relaxation. Guests have the flexibility to explore the forest or enjoy scenic viewpoints while reflecting on the safari experience.

Day 7 – Return to Kigali and Departure

After breakfast, guests begin the journey back to Kigali. Along the scenic route, travelers pass through tea plantations, rolling hills, and local markets, offering final opportunities for photography or cultural engagement.

Upon arrival in Kigali, travelers are transferred to their hotel or the airport for departure, concluding an immersive seven-day primate-focused safari that combines gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, chimpanzee encounters, and Rwanda’s breathtaking landscapes.
