5-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari, Volcanoes National Park

Your driver-guide is waiting just past customs at Kigali International Airport with an Amazing Gorilla Safaris board, for the short ten-minute transfer into the city. With no activities planned for the rest of the day, this evening is deliberately unstructured — time to shower off the flight, get an early dinner, and rest ahead of tomorrow’s drive north.

The drive to Kinigi covers barely two hours on some of the best-maintained roads in East Africa, climbing steadily through Rwanda’s famous “thousand hills” — terraced farmland on slopes that would be considered impossibly steep for agriculture almost anywhere else. Many travellers build in a stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial before leaving the city; sobering, but widely regarded as essential for understanding the Rwanda you’re about to see. You arrive at your lodge in Kinigi by early-to-mid afternoon, with the Virunga volcanoes — Bisoke, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo — visible from most lodges here, in time for an evening trekking briefing.

A 6am wake-up for the short drive to park headquarters, where the 7am briefing opens with a performance by the Kinigi intore dancers before rangers assign trekking groups of up to eight to specific habituated families based on fitness level and where trackers last located them on the volcanic slopes. The trek itself climbs through increasingly misty, moss-draped forest — often steeper than Bwindi’s terrain given the volcanic slopes involved — before the strict, unhurried hour with your assigned family and the walk back down.

A genuinely open day: golden monkey tracking is a real option here, a lower-altitude trek into the park’s bamboo zone to find a troop of these fast-moving, acrobatic primates, considerably less demanding than the day before. Travellers who’d rather not book a second activity simply rest at the lodge, most of which look straight out at the volcanoes.
