Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s oldest established route and the only one offering hut accommodation rather than camping, a genuine comfort difference at altitude. It’s also the shortest standard route, which means less time to acclimatise — a trade-off worth weighing honestly.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

A trek through rainforest from the Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m), roughly 4 hours.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

A trek across moorland to Horombo Hut (3,720m), roughly 6 hours, with Kibo’s summit visible on clear days.

DAY 3

Acclimatisation Day, Horombo Hut

A day hike to Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi Ridge to aid acclimatisation, returning to Horombo Hut to sleep.

DAY 4

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

A trek across the alpine desert saddle to Kibo Hut (4,700m), roughly 6 hours, with an early dinner and rest before the midnight summit push.

DAY 5

Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, Descend to Horombo Hut

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Marangu’s success rate lower than Machame’s?Generally yes, largely due to less time spent acclimatising; we always recommend the 6-day version with the built-in rest day over the bare 5-day minimum for exactly this reason.
What are the huts actually like?Basic but weatherproof dormitory-style bunks, shared with other climbing groups; bedding is not provided, so a warm sleeping bag is essential.
