6-Day Rwanda Highlights: Kigali, Volcanoes and Lake Kivu

Your driver-guide is waiting just past customs at Kigali International Airport with an Amazing Gorilla Safaris board, for the short transfer into the city. The evening is deliberately unstructured — time to rest ahead of tomorrow’s full city day.

A full day in the capital before the drive north: the Kigali Genocide Memorial first, sobering but widely regarded as essential for understanding modern Rwanda, followed by Kimironko Market for a genuine slice of everyday city life, and a stop at a contemporary art or craft cooperative. By early afternoon it’s on the road to Kinigi, under two hours on well-maintained roads through Rwanda’s terraced hill country, arriving in time for an evening trekking briefing.

A 6am wake-up for the short drive to park headquarters, the 7am briefing opening with a performance by the Kinigi intore dancers before groups of up to eight are assigned to specific families, then the trek itself through increasingly misty forest on the volcanic slopes, and the strict hour with your gorilla family.

A scenic drive west to Rwanda’s largest lake, the road winding through tea plantations and terraced hillsides with the lake itself coming into view well before you reach the shore. Arrival by early-to-mid afternoon, the rest of the day free to unwind after the trek.

A genuinely free day — swimming off the lodge’s stretch of shoreline, a boat trip out toward one of the lake’s small islands, or simply resting after a physically demanding trek two days before. Lake Kivu sits at a comfortable altitude that keeps afternoons warm rather than hot, good for actually spending time outdoors.
