6-Day Walking Safari, South Luangwa Style Trails in East Africa

Your driver-guide meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for the drive north, crossing the equator near Nanyuki, roughly three and a half hours to Borana Conservancy on the Laikipia plateau, arriving with time to settle in before an evening briefing on the days ahead.

A morning walk with an armed ranger and tracker, moving quietly on foot rather than by vehicle, reading spoor and dung to piece together which animals passed through overnight, and stopping often to study smaller details — dung beetles, termite mounds, medicinal plants used by local communities — that a vehicle simply drives past. An afternoon game drive covers more ground, following up on whatever the morning’s tracks suggested.

A longer walking trail deeper into the conservancy’s hills, genuinely testing terrain in places, with an optional horseback safari in the afternoon for confident riders — Borana’s rolling grassland is considered some of the best horseback safari country in Kenya, the open terrain keeping wildlife visible at a safe distance throughout.

A drive to neighbouring Loisaba Conservancy, known for its dramatic escarpment views over the Ewaso Nyiro valley and one of Kenya’s most successful African wild dog reintroduction and monitoring programmes.

A morning walking trail along the escarpment rim, the ground dropping away sharply on one side toward the valley floor far below, then a night in an open-air star bed — a raised, walled platform with no roof, wheeled out under the open Laikipia sky for a night genuinely under the stars, with a ranger stationed nearby throughout.
