7-Day Kenya Classic Safari: Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli

Your driver-guide meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, or your Nairobi hotel if you’ve overnighted, for an early departure by 6:30–7am, beating the city’s notorious traffic before it builds. The route runs south-west out of Nairobi, dropping off the Rift Valley escarpment near Maai Mahiu with a photo stop at the viewpoint overlooking the valley floor, then on through Narok town — the last proper shopping stop before the reserve. The final stretch onto reserve land runs partly on unpaved track, arriving at your Mara camp by early-to-mid afternoon in time for a first game drive as the light softens toward evening.

A full day out on the Mara’s plains, split by a picnic breakfast or lunch stop wherever the morning’s sightings take you. This is Kenya’s most reliable big-cat country — the Mara’s resident lion prides are large and well-studied, and the open, short-grass terrain means sightings tend to be at genuine distance rather than fleeting glimpses through cover. Elephant, buffalo and giraffe round out the day, with the Great Migration’s wildebeest and zebra herds an additional draw for travellers visiting between roughly July and October.

One more early game drive while the Mara’s morning light is at its best, then breakfast back at camp before the drive north-east to Lake Nakuru — climbing back up onto the Rift Valley floor, roughly three to four hours depending on road conditions. Arrival by mid-afternoon.

A morning game drive around the lake’s alkaline shores, historically one of the best flamingo-viewing spots in East Africa, and through the park’s dedicated sanctuary protecting both black and white rhino behind electrified fencing — one of the more reliable places in Kenya to see either species. After lunch, the drive continues toward Nairobi, breaking the return journey rather than pushing straight through to Amboseli the same day.

The drive south to Amboseli runs via the Namanga border town on the Tanzania frontier, though you stay on the Kenyan side throughout, roughly four hours from the Nairobi area. Kilimanjaro comes into view well before the park gates on a clear day, its snow-capped summit rising directly across the border in Tanzania. Afternoon game drive on arrival.

A full day among Amboseli’s large elephant herds — some of the biggest, most reliably visible family groups anywhere in Africa, several with tusks long enough to nearly touch the ground — with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop for genuinely striking photography on clear mornings before the mountain typically clouds over by mid-morning.
