8-Day Uganda Primate Safari: Gorillas and Chimpanzees

8 DaysDuration

This itinerary skips the savannah parks entirely to focus on Uganda’s two headline primates — mountain gorillas in Bwindi and chimpanzees in Kibale — with enough time built in for either standard trekking or the longer Habituation Experience at either park.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1

Entebbe to Bwindi

Pickup at Entebbe International Airport, then the drive south-west to Bwindi — around 8–9 hours by road via Kampala’s Northern Bypass, the Equator crossing at Kayabwe, and lunch at Igongo Cultural Centre near Mbarara, or a ninety-minute light aircraft hop into Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip for those who’d rather skip the driving. Evening trekking briefing on arrival.

DAY 2

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Briefing at 7:30am, family assignment by rangers based on fitness and that morning’s tracker reports, then the trek itself — thirty minutes to six hours through dense rainforest, guide and armed ranger leading — followed by a strict hour with the family before the walk back out.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 3

Optional Gorilla Habituation Experience

For travellers who want more than the standard hour, the Gorilla Habituation Experience runs from Rushaga sector: a pre-dawn departure to reach a family still being habituated to human presence, followed by up to four hours observing the ongoing research process rather than the standard single hour, capped at just four visitors daily given how sensitive the process is. Anyone not booking this add-on has a genuinely free day instead — a nature walk on Bwindi’s established trails, or simply resting.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 4

Transfer to Kibale Forest

The drive to Kibale runs north via Queen Elizabeth’s fringing roads rather than the full park circuit, through tea country and past Fort Portal’s crater lakes, arriving with time to settle in before the next day’s chimp tracking briefing.

DAY 5

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale

Briefing at Kanyanchu visitor centre, then into the forest after a habituated chimpanzee community — a gentler walk than the gorilla trek given Kibale’s more forgiving terrain — with a strict hour once the group is found, usually to the sound of pant-hoots carrying through the canopy from other community members.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 6

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

The extended version: a pre-dawn departure to meet a community at their overnight nest site as they wake, then following them for up to four hours as researchers record behavioural data — a genuinely different rhythm from the standard hour-long visit, capped at a small group size. Anyone skipping this add-on instead has a free morning before the afternoon at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary.
Accommodation

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 7

Free Day or Bigodi Wetland Walk

A deliberately unstructured day to close out the primate-focused week — the community-run boardwalk at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for birding and monkey sightings, or simply resting at the lodge before the drive back to Entebbe.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
DAY 8

Return to Entebbe

Checkout after breakfast for the drive south, roughly five to six hours via Fort Portal and Mubende, with a lunch stop en route and drop-off timed against your onward flight.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

The Two Habituation Experiences Compared

Both optional add-ons follow the same underlying logic — extended access to a family or community still adjusting to human presence, run alongside genuine ongoing research — but differ meaningfully in practice. The gorilla version runs to roughly $1,500 per person with a cap of just four visitors daily; the chimpanzee version costs closer to $220 with a similarly small but slightly larger group. Many travellers on this itinerary choose one rather than both, given the combined cost of doing everything.

Pacing Across Eight Days

We deliberately space the two standard treks and the two optional Habituation Experiences across separate days rather than stacking demanding activities back to back, given how physically involved each one is in its own right.
Can I do just one Habituation Experience, not both?Yes — most travellers choose one, typically whichever species interests them more, rather than adding both extended experiences to the same trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to book both Habituation Experiences? No — they’re optional add-ons priced separately. Many travellers do one or the other rather than both.
Why does this itinerary skip the savannah parks? It’s built specifically for travellers whose priority is primates, not general wildlife — see our 10-Day Grand Safari if you want the Big Five included too.
