Choosing Your Route Based on Your Itinerary

Which combination of flights, road transfers and charter options makes sense depends heavily on how much time you have and which parks are already on your itinerary. Travellers on a single-country Uganda trip with ten days or more often prefer the overland route via Lake Mburo, since it turns a long transfer day into an additional wildlife-viewing opportunity rather than dead travel time. Travellers on a tighter week-long schedule, or those combining Uganda with a second country like Kenya or Tanzania, generally find the charter flight option pays for itself in preserved trekking and rest days. For Rwanda-only itineraries, the short overland transfer from Kigali is fast enough that a charter flight rarely changes the itinerary meaningfully, making it more of a luxury upgrade than a practical necessity.

Flying Into the Region

Most international travellers arrive through one of two airports: Entebbe International Airport (EBB) for Uganda, roughly 40 minutes from Kampala, or Kigali International Airport (KGL) for Rwanda. Both airports receive direct or one-stop flights from major hubs in Europe, the Middle East and increasingly from other African cities, and both are well set up for onward domestic connections. If your itinerary covers both countries, entering through one and exiting through the other – rather than backtracking – is usually the more efficient routing.

Getting to Bwindi and Mgahinga From Entebbe or Kampala

The overland route from Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi’s various sectors typically takes eight to nine hours by road, covering roughly 500 kilometres of mostly tarmac road with a final stretch of murram (gravel) road into the park itself. Most itineraries break this drive into two days with an overnight stop en route, commonly around Lake Mburo National Park, both to split the distance and to add a wildlife stop along the way.

For travellers short on time, a charter flight from Entebbe to one of the local airstrips near Bwindi – Kihihi or Kisoro, depending on sector – cuts the journey to around ninety minutes in the air. This adds cost but is a genuine time-saver on tighter itineraries, particularly for travellers combining Bwindi with other Ugandan parks in a single trip.

Getting to Volcanoes National Park From Kigali

Rwanda’s gorilla trekking base is considerably closer to its main airport than Uganda’s – Volcanoes National Park sits roughly 105 kilometres from Kigali, a drive of about two to three hours on good tarmac road the whole way. This shorter, more predictable transfer is one of the practical reasons Rwanda is often considered the more convenient option for travellers with limited time.

A helicopter transfer is also available between Kigali and lodges near Volcanoes National Park, cutting the journey to around 25 minutes in the air for travellers prioritising speed and a scenic aerial route over the terraced hills and volcanoes.

Crossing the Border Between Uganda and Rwanda

Travellers combining Bwindi or Mgahinga with Volcanoes National Park typically cross overland via the Cyanika border post near Kisoro, a well-used crossing with straightforward immigration formalities on both sides. The drive from Bwindi’s southern sectors to Musanze via Cyanika generally takes two to four hours depending on the exact starting sector and road conditions.

Airlines and Booking Your Flights

Entebbe is served by a range of carriers including Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates, KLM, Turkish Airlines and Uganda’s own national carrier, giving reasonably flexible routing from most parts of the world. Kigali similarly connects through RwandAir alongside several of the same international carriers, and RwandAir in particular has expanded its direct route network considerably in recent years, making Kigali an increasingly convenient entry point on its own.

We recommend booking international flights before finalising exact trekking dates only once your gorilla or chimpanzee permits are confirmed, since permit availability – not flight availability – is usually the tighter constraint on when your trip can happen. Building a day of buffer around your international arrival and departure also protects against the knock-on effects of any flight delay on a tightly scheduled multi-day itinerary.

Domestic Charter Flights in More Detail

Beyond the standard Entebbe-to-Bwindi charter route, several smaller airstrips serve the wider trekking region, including Kisoro airstrip near Mgahinga and the Bwindi sectors, and Kihihi airstrip serving the northern Bwindi sectors more directly. Charter operators typically fly small aircraft seating anywhere from six to fourteen passengers, and schedules are generally built around standard morning departure windows to align with trekking start times the following day. Baggage allowances on these flights are considerably tighter than international carriers, usually in the region of 15 kilograms including hand luggage, which is worth planning packing around if you’re flying any domestic leg.

Seasonal Road Conditions

Road conditions on the murram sections near Bwindi shift noticeably with the season. During the two dry windows – roughly June to August and December to February – the gravel roads into the park sectors are firm and the drive, while still long, is relatively smooth. In the wetter months between, sections can become slippery and occasionally require careful driving on steeper stretches, particularly on the approach to Nkuringo and Ruhija given their more challenging terrain. Rwanda’s road network is generally in excellent condition throughout, including the full route to Volcanoes National Park, reflecting the country’s significant infrastructure investment over the past two decades. What to Bring for the Road Journey

Whichever route you take, a long travel day is easier with some basic preparation. Bring snacks and water for the drive, since roadside stops are limited to small towns along the route rather than dedicated rest areas. A phone or camera charger that works from a vehicle’s USB or cigarette-lighter port is genuinely useful given how much of the day is spent on the road. Motion sickness tablets are worth packing if you’re prone to it, since the final approach roads involve a fair amount of winding and elevation change.
